Unsinkable Is She
Unsinkable Is She depicts the bizarre, surreal world of cruise lining. Taken while the artist was vacationing with her father in 2015, the photographs show a false, constructed interior reality of quasi-opulence. These scenes are offset by images of the expansive, unending external world, serving as reminders of the mystery, danger, and unpredictability of the sea.
Almost completely devoid of human presence, the photographs emphasise the symbolic objects found around the ship. The passage of time, together with feelings of trapped-ness and the desire to escape, are represented by the cruise liner’s clocks, paintings of still-life, and frozen statuary. In response to the emotional journey that this loaded environment took her on whilst aboard the ship, the artist makes brief, bodily protests… small interruptions in the carefully controlled, time-tabled cruise lining microcosm.
